Brian Scott: Brookings art supporter dies at 75
September 12, 2014 07:58 pm

Brian Scott, left, and Horst Wolf hold Wolf’s watercolor portrait of Scott that was honored at an art show in 2004.

Longtime Brookings resident Brian Scott was not an artist, but he was an aficionado who dedicated himself to supporting local artists and helped build what has become a thriving art community in his hometown.

Scott died Friday at age 75 after a two-year battle with kidney failure.

The public is invited to say a few words and raise a glass to toast Scott at the conclusion of the regularly scheduled Second Saturday Art Walk from 4-6 p.m. today (Sept. 13) at the Brian Scott Gallery

Harbor tap water will remain salty until first rain
September 12, 2014 12:40 pm

The level of the Chetco River has reached a record low, and there is no sign of significant rain in the long-range forecast.

Harbor residents better get use to salt-flavored tap water because it won’t get better until the first good rain storm comes along, Harbor Water District officials said.

And that could be weeks from now, according to long-range forecast by the National Weather Service.

“We need rain. It’s that simple,” said Dave VanCleave, superintendent for Harbor Water District PUD.

The brackish water, the result of ocean water infiltrating the fresh water of the low-flowing Chetco River, does not pose a health risk to most people at this time, VanCleave said.
