Test-driving Common Core

This spring, students of the Brookings-Harbor School District will participate in the usual state testing, but the tests will bear little resemblance to ones they’ve taken in previous years.

Oregon, along with 20 other states, has adopted a new program called the Smarter Balanced testing system. This new system is based on a set of standards known as the Common Core State Standards, which are consistent at schools throughout the country, and emphasize high performance and a focus on preparing students for college or careers.

Brookings-Harbor High School English teacher Erika Backs was part of a team that conducted a pilot of the Smarter Balanced tests when she taught in Kansas. She explained some of the differences with the new testing system.

Home Rule Charter nixed

Halfway into its two-year project, the county-appointed Home Rule Charter Committee will disband after unanimously deciding to recommend to county commissioners that Curry County remain under a general law form of government.

“I just don’t think things are broken,” said board member Jacqueline Moger.

On the other hand, the committee voted 3-2 to recommend the commissioners consider creating a county administrator position to address daily departmental issues and free them up to concentrate on issues that affect the county on a larger scale, such as the impending fiscal crisis.
