A closer look: Curry County Jail

Jail Commander Mike Espinoza spends two hours answering citizens’ questions during tour of the jail.

It wasn’t the antiquated way of getting around the jail — big brass key and radio requests to dispatch — that stunned the half-dozen or so citizens touring the aging facility Tuesday.

It wasn’t the “soggy” pipes, deteriorating in the concrete in which they are encased.

Nor was it the lack of fire suppression, or the lack of emergency exits.

“I don’t think the facility is that bad — if they had the manpower,” said Nancy May, one of those in the tour.

“John Q. Public just isn’t educated — this really opens my eyes. I would have voted differently, had I known,” May said.
