Yard sale benefiting fire victims set today |
Garage sales are a dime a dozen in the Brookings-Harbor area, but one scheduled today (July 30) offers a different twist: no price tags. Customers pick their price and all the money raised will go directly to the families devastated by a fire that killed one man and destroyed five trailers in a Harbor mobile home park earlier this month. “People have been so great in donating stuff to the families, but we have an abundance of items and the families need money for food and rent,” said Debbie Stott, who organized the sale. “If everybody just gives $5, we’d have rent for all five families,” she said. “I really want to get these people back into their own homes.” Members of the affected families will manage the sale, schedule from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 15576 South Highway 101 in Harbor (across from the Harbor Terrace RV Park.) The families will also sell homemade tamales. “Every single penny that comes in goes straight to the families,” she said. Stott encouraged people to just stop by and meet the families. “They really want to meet all the people who has helped them.” The outpouring of community donations in the weeks following the July 6 fire includes clothing, furniture, kitchen implements, beds and toys. Stott hopes selling off the surplus items will not only raise money for the families, but provide good deals for others in need. “We have some really nice items for sale,” she said. |
