Robert H. ‘Bob’ Stanhurst |
Robert “Bob” H. Stanhurst, 89, passed away July 22, 2010, at a local care facility in Brookings. Bob was born June 1, 1921, in Brookings, to Charles and Faye (Jaggers) Stanhurst. He grew up and attended school in Brookings. Following high school, Bob attended University of Oregon in Eugene, and Northwestern University in Chicago. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Bob returned to Smith River, where he established Stanhurst Bulbs, Inc – a company he would operate for more than 60 years. Bob was a 50-year member of Brookings Elks Lodge 1934 and a member of Sidney Croft Masonic Lodge 206 for more than 60 years. He married Merlyn Conners. They enjoyed annual cruises and seeing different parts of the world. A native of the Brookings-Harbor area, Bob was named Pioneer Citizen for the Memorial Day parade in 2004. Survivors include Merlyn, his wife of 25 years, of Smith River; daughter Nora Olsen of Brookings; stepchildren Sharon Garrison of Issaquah, Wash., Debra Coe (Randy) of Hillsboro, Steven Pomerleau (Betty) of Brookings, Diane Wiley (Dale) of Forest Grove, Sandra Trujillo (Jesse) of Bayfield, Colo. Also surviving are numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Gardner. An interment service was held July 27, at W.J. Ward Memorial Cemetery in Brookings. A celebration of Bob’s life will be at 3 p.m., Thursday, July 29, at Brookings Elks Lodge 1934, 800 Elk Drive. A reception will follow the service there.
