Port Orford teacher facing sex charges

Charles Klea
GOLD BEACH – A teacher at Pacific High School near Port Orford is charged with taking a freshman girl into a classroom at least two times and offering to pay her for sex.

Charles Douglas Klea, 48, is charged with two counts of first-degree misconduct and two counts of prostitution. All are misdemeanors.

Klea, industrial arts and ag science teacher for grades seven through 12, was indicted by the Curry County Grand Jury on Thursday and appeared in Curry County Circuit Court on Friday, where Judge Cynthia Beaman ordered him booked and agreed that he could be on conditional release until his plea hearing, scheduled for Feb. 25.

Conditions of that release include no contact with Pacific High School, any staff member of the school or any students of the school. He is required to stay in Curry County.

“In Port Orford, that is virtually house arrest,” said Klea’s attorney, Jim Gardner.

Curry County Sheriff John Bishop said Klea’s arrest concluded a weeklong investigation into alleged misconduct.

“Detective Dave Gardiner from the Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of Pacific High School Administration conducted the investigation and interviews of numerous students and faculty at the high school,” Bishop said.

“The investigation and evidence was turned over to the District Attorney and the case was presented to the Curry County Grand Jury where an indictment was handed down for the arrest of Klea,” the sheriff said.

The indictment lists two separate incidents at the high school, one on Jan. 7 and the other Jan. 21.
