BHHS bowling opens season |
The Brookings-Harbor High School bowling team got its 2009 season under way Sunday with a girls match in Myrtle Creek and the boys on the home court at Azalea Lanes in Brookings. The girls team traveled to Nickel Bowl in Myrtle Creek for their season opener and did very well as a team, according to Head Coach Donna Knauss. “They had a great pin count and lots of team spirit,” Knauss said. “The (team) was very excited to be bowling again, and it showed.” The Bruin girls finished fifth and barely missed the rolloffs for the top four teams, Knauss said.“I am very excited about this season,” Knauss said. “I think the lady Bruins have a real chance at bringing home some medals this year.” Bruin newcomer and exchange student Liz Ha had the high game for the girls of 173. The girls also received three sportsmanship awards: one, an individual nod for team captain Monica Mitchell, and two team awards. JV Head Coach Steven Scruggs said his team had a good tournament. The JV Bruins finished in fifth place, 60 pins out of fourth position, which would have put them in the rolloffs. “(The JV team) did better than even they thought they would,” Scruggs said, noting the team has several first-year bowlers. “Almost making the cut in the first tournament of the season is pretty exciting.” George Kreger and Kevin Golden both posted 143s, the team high Sunday. The varsity Bruin boys qualified third at Azalea Sunday, but lost to Hidden Valley in the first playoff and finished the day fourth. High baker game score was 200 and co-team captain Cody Stumpenhaus recorded the team high score of 216. The other Bruin captain had a strong finish for BHHS Sunday with his 197, 194, 192 performance. “That was pretty sound for the first tournament of the year,” Varsity Head Coach Randy Scruggs said. Based on early results, Randy said it’s going to be a good year. “It was a really good showing for the first tournament of the year,” he said. “The future looks bright. Next on the Bruins’ schedule: Sunday, Dec.6, girls at Medford; boys at Roseburg. |
