Chetco Activity Center goes Wii

“Lucky” Phyllis Latter, new general manager of the Chetco Activity Center, along with officers and members of the center are having fun learning how to use the Wii Sports Program recently donated to the center by Fred Meyer.

While demonstrating the new program, Lucky, as she prefers to be called, said, “Once Curry Health Network discovered that we had gotten the original Wii program, they graciously donated the WiiFit Program to the center.”

She added, “We are so excited because this will encourage our members and friends to keep or develop good health.”

Lucky, who assumed the position of the center’s general manager on April 1, explained that the center is a place for members of the community to gather together and enjoy socializing and activities. “We have a wonderful new cook, and besides serving ‘yummy’ lunches, we try to establish activities that are enjoyable and beneficial to all who would like to participate,” she said.

She went on to explain about the new gift. “Wii is an interactive program that people can participate in while watching the viewing screen. The Sports Program lets you enjoy bowling, tennis, baseball, and other sports.”

Last week Lucky was joined by center Past President Shirley Craig and President Pat Widmer, to demonstrate the new program. “We’ve hooked these programs up and they are ready to be used,” she added.

The programs will be available on a regular basis from 2 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays, with someone there to explain how to use the Wii Sports Program for fun and exercise.

Lucky said, “We would also like help from volunteers to coordinate this new activity, so if you are familiar with WiiFit, or would like to be, and you have some time on your hands, let us know. We’d love to have you come and join us.”

She explained that, as the new general manager, she has much to learn about the center, and welcomes information about the history and the many who have volunteered time and concern over the years to make the center an important part of the community.

To those who have served over the years with whom she has not yet become acquainted, Lucky expressed this message, “If we seem to have forgotten you, that is not our intention. Just give us a friendly reminder of your behind the scenes generosity, and accept our heartfelt apology. We want to publicly thank all of you who not only make it possible for us to serve our community, but help us do so in a fun and exciting manner.”

She quickly added, “Our sincere heartfelt thanks to Fred Meyer and Curry Health Network for their contribution to the Chetco Activity Center – your gathering place.”

Lucky again requested new and old friends of the center to please pop in and introduce themselves to discuss any questions and suggestions about the center. The Chetco Activity Center is located at 550 Chetco Lane in Brookings. The telephone number is (541) 469-6822.
