Bruin girls 1-1 last day of tournament |
On the final day of the Beat the Heat Summer Basketball Tournament at Brookings-Harbor High School Wednesday, the homestanding Bruin team went 1-1 in two games. In game one, the Bruins fought back from an early and sizable deficit for a 40-33 win. The second game wasn’t quite what the Bruins might have wanted, and they ultimately succumbed to Coquille. Game one opponent Phoenix High School stepped onto the court versus the Bruins and quickly built a 10-point lead. In the second half, BHHS got into a rhythm defensively and started challenging every shot, according to Head Coach Chris Schofield. “We made plays (defensively) when we needed it,” he said. The Bruin turned stops into points, including two crucial. late three-pointers from Merriam Hernandez, who had missed the first two days of the tournament. According to Schofield, Ciara Freeman was also important to the comeback and played extremely hard. “When (Freeman) plays like that, she sets the tempo for the whole team,” he said. Versus Coquille in game two, BHHS got down early and never recovered versus what Schofield called a big, physical team. Of the body of work at Beat the Heat, Schofield said he was impressed. “I was thrilled with our girls,” he said. “You can tell we worked hard this summer, and it’s starting to show.” |
