Tuesday 2-1 for Bruins at Beat the Heat

In second day action at the Beat the Heat Girls Summer Tournament at Brookings-Harbor High School (BHHS), the Bruins played inhospitable hosts, taking four of five games from visiting teams Monday and Tuesday.

The high school basketball tournament started with a two-victory performance Monday. BHHS comfortably dispensed of Del Norte and LaPine.

Tuesday morning the Bruins ran into a brick wall in the form of 5A West Albany.

According to Head Coach Chris Schofield, the Bruins didn’t play well and took their first and only loss in the tournament thus far.

“(West Albany) was pretty tough,” Schofield said.

The Bruins rebounded in their second game Tuesday and downed 6A Sandy.

Schofield said he was pleased by the improvement he saw in the second game of the day.

“We executed really well,” he said. “We played very well (versus Sandy).”

In the nightcap versus Hidden Valley, the Bruins held off several Mustang runs to win impressively, 40-33.

Schofield said his team saw the floor better against Hidden and shared the ball well. He said offensively they played very well, despite turning the ball over more than he would have liked.

But to Schofield, summer games are less about stats and wins, and more about getting better and progressing.

“We’ve gotten a lot of girls a lot of minutes,” Schofield said. “This is their chance to learn and get better.”

Wednesday the Bruins face Phoenix at 1:30 p.m. and Coquille at 3:50 p.m.
