Six candidates file papers for May 19 school board race |
Curry County school board races are shaping up for the May 19 election following Thursday’s deadline for candidates to file.
All school board positions are for four-year terms unless otherwise noted.
Brookings-Harbor School District 17C Six candidates have filed for four open positions on the Brookings-Harbor School Board. No incumbents are seeking re-election and Position 2 is currently vacant. Allene Fewell and Michael Freels filed for Position 2, which is currently held by Sue Chambers. Fewell is a Brookings resident and former lead advisor for ASPIRE (Access to Student Assistance Programs in Reach of Everyone) at Brookings-Harbor High School. Freels is a member of the Azalea Middle School Site Council, a former member of the Kalmiopsis Elementary School Site Council and coaches youth sports. Jamie Ryan will run unopposed for Position 3, a position that was vacated by Steve Poponi in February. There are two years remaining of the position’s four year term. Ryan, of Brookings, is a tax preparer and a 1994 graduate of Brookings-Harbor High School. Mark Gonzales and Brad Peters will run for Position 4 to replace outgoing Board Member Ken Caylor. Gonzalez, a Cape Ferello resident, has a business management background. Peters is a community businessman and youth soccer coach. Carol Slewing will run unopposed for Position 5, a position currently held by Board Member and Brookings Mayor Larry Anderson. Slewing is a resident of Brookings with a background in education administration.
Three candidates filed for two open Central Curry School Board positions. Sharon Mather is running unopposed as incumbent for Position 1. Mather is an office services director and has worked in the Curry County Elections Office and at Riley Creek School. Stephanie Adams and Lisa Carlson will run for Position 2 to replace outgoing Board Member Joe Wegner. Adams has a background in psychology and has worked as a youth organization aide and as a research assistant. Carlson is a financial manager with retail experience.
Five candidates will run unopposed for five positions on the Port Orford/Langlois School Board. Rosaria Williams will run as an unopposed incumbent for Position 1. Williams is a retired educator. Ester Donaldson will run unopposed to complete the final two years of Board Member Stacy Romele’s term. Donaldson is is a homemaker with experience as a substitute teacher, Cub Scout leader, Scout committee chair, and has worked in retail. Roger Rieber will run as an uncontested incumbent for Position 4. Rieber is a retired university professor. John Jensen will run as an uncontested incumbent for Position 5. Jensen is a member of the U.S. Merchant Marines with a background in farming. Bill Dooley will run unopposed to fill Position 7, which is currently held by Board Member Alan Brown. Dooley is a retired transit manager and former deputy sheriff. |
